DES and Hybrid RANS/LES models for unsteady separated turbulent flow predictions

چکیده
This paper proposes two DES (Detached Eddy Simulation) model and one hybrid RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes)/ LES (Large Eddy Simulation) model for the simulations of unsteady separated turbulent flows. The two-equation k-ε based models are implemented in a full 3-D Navier Stokes solver and simulations are carried out using a 3 order Roe scheme. The predictions of the models are compared for a benchmark problem involving transonic flow over an open cavity and the equivalence between the DES formulations and the hybrid formulation is established. Predicted results for the vorticity, pressure fluctuations, SPL (Sound Pressure level) spectra and different turbulent quantities; such as modeled and resolved TKE (Turbulent Kinetic Energy) profiles, contours and spectra are presented to evaluate various aspects of the proposed models. The numerical results for the SPL spectra are compared with available experimental results and also with the prediction from LES simulations. The grid resolved TKE profiles are also compared with the LES predictions. A comparative study of the CPU time required for the two DES models and the hybrid model is also made.

Des, Hybrid Rans/les and Pans Models for Unsteady Separated Turbulent Flow Simulations
This paper presents computational results for two DES (Detached Eddy Simulation), one hybrid RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes)/ LES (Large Eddy Simulation) and some preliminary results from PANS (Partially Averaged Navier-Stokes) turbulence for simulation of unsteady separated turbulent flows. The models are implemented in a full 3-D Navier Stokes solver and are based on the twoequation k-...
متن کاملCritical Assessment of Hybrid RANS-LES Modeling for Attached and Separated Flows
The objective of this study is to evaluate a recently proposed dynamic hybrid Reynoldsaveraged Navier-Stokes (RANS)-Large Eddy Simulation (LES) modeling framework that seeks to effectively address issues regarding RANS-to-LES transition and explicit grid dependence inherent in most current hybrid RANS-LES (HRL) models. RANSto-LES transition in the investigated dynamic HRL (DHRL) model is based ...
متن کاملLarge Eddy / Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes Simulations of CUBRC Base Heating Experiments
ven with great advances in computational techniques and computing power during recent decades, the modeling of unsteady separated flows, such as those encountered in the wake of a re-entry vehicle, continues to be one of the most challenging problems in CFD. Of most interest to the aerothermodynamics community is accurately predicting transient heating loads on the base of a blunt body, which w...
متن کاملHybrid RANS/LES computation of plane impinging jet flow
Flow characteristics are presented of simulation results of plane impinging jets at high nozzle-plate distances, with two k-ω based hybrid RANS/LES (Reynolds Averaged Navier–Stokes/Large–Eddy Simulation) models and a k-ω RANS model. The first hybrid RANS/LES model is obtained by substitution of the turbulent length scale by the local grid size in the destruction term of the turbulent kinetic en...
متن کاملDetached-eddy Simulation: Current Status and Perspectives
Detached-Eddy Simulation (DES) is a hybrid technique proposed in 1997 as a numerically feasible and plausibly accurate approach for predicting massively separated flows. Since its inception the method has been applied to a range of configurations including simple shapes such as cylinders, spheres and aircraft forebodies, in addition to complex geometries including fighter aircraft. The accuracy...
